Most of the time the date of birth or a misspelled name needs to be corrected on a Social Security Card. Other information may be corrected such as your address, phone number, or email address but it won't require replacing your Social Security card.
What documents do I need to update my Social Security card?
In order to update or correct information on your Social Security card, you need to prove your identity, your age, and your correct name or DOB. You can mail one of the following combinations:
- U.S Passport
- U.S State ID and a U.S Birth Certificate
- U.S Driver's License and a U.S Birth Certificate
- U.S Military Card and a U.S Birth Certificate

- Government ID Card showing your date of birth and a recent photograph) and a U.S Birth Certificate
Important Note: Your ID document will be returned in a separate mail since the agencies which validate your application and process your new card are not at the same location.
All documents submitted must be original. No photocopies are accepted. The U.S. Birth Certificate must be a Certified Copy. The U.S. Birth Certificate can be replaced by a Certificate of Naturalization.
Tool Tips: If you need a Certified Copy of your Birth Certificate, please use the Birth Certificate Request on Vital Records Online
How long do I need to get my new Social Security card updated?
The social security administration requires two weeks to process your application from the date of reception. Depending on the number of requests and the local office workload, this processing time may vary.
Date of birth or name correction requests may take longer depending on the documents provided. If the administration has to perform an extra verification, this process may be extended by 1 to 4 weeks.
